The Best Ways to Wear Oxblood: Clothes & Makeup

Last updated on February 11th, 2024 at 08:42 am

Oxblood is a weird sounding color, isn’t it? But at the same time, you automatically know what color it is. According to Wikipedia, “Oxblood or ox-blood is a dark shade of red. It resembles burgundy, but has less purple and more dark brown hues.” Here’s how the color expert, Pantone, shows oxblood.

Oxblood

Oxblood is a color that we’ve been seeing everywhere since the start of fall and doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. And while our hearts might be thinking about Spring, our heads know that there’s still enough winter left to enjoy some wardrobe pieces in oxblook.

So, let’s look at oxblood, not only in all the fashion categories, but in makeup too. Jen has put together a great oxblood makeup look for you to try. (jump to Jen’s makeup here).

You’ll notice as you click on the links that I don’t think one of them lists the color as “oxblood”. You’ll see “burgundy”, “wine”, “cabernet”, and in some instances, “chocolate”. But we think that oxblood covers all of those shades and we didn’t want to pick just one.

Oxblood Coats and Jackets

I had been eyeing this cape-blazer for a while and thought purchasing it in oxblood would be perfect. It’s such a fun and unique look, but we’ve included traditional jackets and coats as well.

Oxblood Tops

Here is where we probably have the most fun. Oxblood is a great color to wear near your face since it is pretty flattering for all skin tones. We’ve got some great sweaters, tops, blouses and even some short sleeve options as we edge closer to spring!

If you’re here because you found our post from Dianne’s new Instagram (@dianne_instyle), here are the looks I shared, with the links below. Just FYI, Dianne’s new Instagram is dedicated to style over 50. It won’t change anything that we do here on the Harper Girls, it just will be a little more focused to the issues over 50 we all share.

Sweaters

Blouses

Casual Tops

Finding a cute casual top (for me anyway) can be difficult if you don’t want a sweatshirt. But I found this one and I love the button detail. It’s casual but still has some interest.

Short Sleeve Tops

These are perfect transition tops. You can wear them as the weather gets warmer and then pull them out again in early fall.

Pants

I love a colored pant, especially in this oxblood color. Why? Because you can easily pair oxblood with black. Other colors that look great with oxblood are camel, gray, navy, and of course, white.

Oxblood Handbags

My husband Jeff bought me an oxblood colored bag several years back and I use it all the time. It’s perfect for a pop of color, especially with an all-black outfit.

Shoes

The same philosophy of a pop of color with an oxblood handbag, goes the same for shoes. I love these booties with my monochromatic black outfit. I just purchased my studded bag, by the way, from Mango on sale for $25.99 and it’s still available as of this writing.

Boots & Booties

Heels

Flats and Low Heels

Sneakers

Oxblood Jewelry

If you don’t want to go “all-in” on oxblood, then jewelry is a great option. It will give you just an accent of color with your outfit.

Necklaces

Earrings

Bracelets

Rings

Scarves and Belts

Just like jewelry, if you only want a touch of an accent color, this is a great way to go.

Oxblood Makeup

Yes, smokey eyes, cheeks and lips are sort of overkill. But I also love it. Depending on what you’re wearing and where you’re going, you can totally pull this off.

Even one or two of these elements creates a really stunning look!

Oxblood Eyes

Following this smokey eye tutorial, you can create a gorgeous look with any color you want!

I always start with a light shade all over the lid and into and above the crease a little bit. You can go in with a slightly darker shade in the crease for more of a gradient. Or start using your Oxblood shade!

If you’re going for a bold look, start packing the shadow all over your lid until you’re happy with the saturation. Using a smaller brush, and one of your lighter shades, blend your crease until everything looks seamless.

Blend shadow under your lash line and connect at the outer corner.

Add a little bit of liner, no wing liner needed here! And then you’re all set! Follow with a whole lot of mascara or false lashes.

Oxblood Blush

When I’m using a bold color like Oxblood, I usually won’t use bronzer. Or if I do, it’ll be just a little bit. I really like the “evil snow queen” feeling it gives me. Ha!

This color, “Mood” might look a little intimidating, but it’s definitely wearable!

This is a cream product, so make sure you’re applying on top of foundation or to your bare skin before powder.

I like to use my finger to blend it out, but you could use a makeup sponge or brush!

Oxblood Lips

Whenever I’m wearing a dark or bright lip color, I always opt for a liquid formula. This is the easiest way to make sure lipstick doesn’t end up all over your face.

Start with lip liner, and it’s ok if it’s not the same shade as your lipstick.

Go in with a thin layer of liquid lipstick to start, and apply more as needed.

If you need a little bit of cleanup at the end, grab a small synthetic brush and concealer. Cover up any lipstick that went outside your lip line, and blend out!
