How to Use Red Light Therapy At Home

Are you familiar with red light therapy? We had both heard of it, but didn’t know much about it. We were especially interested in learning more about using red light therapy at home. So, when CurrentBody reached out to us to see if we were interested in trying their LED Light Therapy Face Mask, we quickly said yes.

I (Dianne) are giving it a try first since Jen is currently breastfeeding.  So I will be giving you the 411 on red light therapy at home using the CurrentBody LED mask. This includes how it works, is it safe and most importantly, my results to date. Using light therapy is something you should use continuously over time, but I have already seen results that I will share with you. I will be updating this post in the future to share the long term effects as well.

CurrentBody wants YOU to give their LED Light Therapy Face Mask a try too. They are offering 10% all CurrentBody products with the code HARPERCB. Click on the button below to learn more:

Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

Our natural inclination when we hear “light therapy” is to wonder whether it’s safe.  We’re all familiar with the dangers of UV light, but red light therapy is nothing like UV light. Red light therapy is considered not just safe, but helpful for wrinkles, redness, acne, scars and other signs of aging.  I am including a link to the Cleveland Clinic website. The Cleveland Clinic is a well-known authority in healthcare, that gives you their perspective on red light therapy.  You will see that not only do they feel it’s safe, but discuss the potential benefits.

That said, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor prior to use, especially if you have any particular skin conditions. Also check with your doctor if you are on any prescription or over-the-counter drugs that are known to cause light sensitivity.  Any light therapy products you purchase should have a list of contraindications that you should follow.

You may want to consider wearing goggles as well (that’s what I do).  While most products are considered safe without goggles, I personally prefer to wear them as an extra layer of protection.  The light is very bright so you really won’t be able to keep your eyes open, so why not get extra protection?

How does Red Light Therapy Work?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Red light therapy is thought to work by acting on the “power plant” in  your body’s cells called mitochondria.  With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, such as repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation.  More specifically, certain cells absorb light wavelengths and are stimulate to work”

So, what does that mean from a beauty perspective? Red light therapy boosts collagen which gives skin its structure, strength and elasticity. Increased collagen will give you more youthful looking skin.  When used regularly, light therapy can be used to reduce breakouts, pigmentation, rosacea symptoms, bags under eyes, psoriasis and other side effects of inflammation.

How often can  I use Red Light Therapy at Home?

Red light therapy is considered safe for daily use, but you do have to be careful of over use.  One of the things that I love about my CurrentBody LED mask is that it has an automatic shut off so it’s impossible to use it for more than 10 minutes in a session. Right now I am using it 3-4 times a week to get started.  It has been working great for me, so I plan on increasing my usage to improve my results. That will be part of the update to this blog post in the future.

Can I use it with other treatments?

One of the biggest questions that I had personally was whether I could use the CurrentBody LED mask with microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is something I do regularly. The short answer is yes.  The CurrentBody LED mask works great with just about any other skin treatments.  I’ve read positive articles on combining red light therapy with microneedling, facials, dermaplaning and more.  However, you should check to see if it works with your particular skin treatments.

Before and After Skin Care

The CurrentBody LED mask should be used on clean skin.  Make sure your skin is clean and free from any skincare products and makeup.  You don’t want to block the light from penetrating your skin because of product residue.  It will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

You can follow up with any of your usual skincare products including moisturizers, serums, retinol, Vitamine C, hyaluronic acid and more.  Once again, I would research your particular product.

How did the Currentbody LED Mask Work for Me?

For someone who struggles with skin issues, I was both excited and nervous to try the CurrentBody LED mask.  I am pretty cautious with what I do with my skin, but I did the research and felt completely safe in trying it.  And I am glad I did.  With only a few weeks of use under my belt, I am already seeing results.

I struggle with a lot of redness in my skin (and I may even have rosacea, although I haven’t been officially diagnosed yet). So using something with the word “red” in it wouldn’t have been the first place I looked for help. But, I am pleased to report that it is definitely helping in reducing the redness and inflammation in my skin, as you can see in the photos above and below.

I don’t know how much difference you can see, but for me, it’s already making an impact. Beside the spots, you can see that my overall redness has started to reduce. I think my skin texture looks much smoother as well. This is roughly after two weeks of using the mask about four times a week.

I have been using my mask about 3-4 times a week to be cautious.  You can use it a little more often than that and I am ramping up to that to enhance my results.  As I mentioned, I am pretty cautious so I wanted to start slow.  But LED red light therapy is a long game.  That’s why I am sharing my initial results using the CurrentBody mask with you but I will also update this post in the next several months to share with you the longer term effects.

Will I Continue To Use Red Light Therapy At Home?

The answer is YES! We all want instant results (including me) but with a commitment to long term use with the CurrentBody’s mask as well as combining LED light therapy with my regular skin care routine, I am excited about how my skin will look in just a few short months.  Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook so you can be notified when this post is updated!
