Beauty At Any Age Volume 11: How to Create a Fall Eyeshadow Look

Fall is just about here and for many of us, it’s our favorite time of the year. Cider mills, football games and of course, all those gorgeous fall colors, both in nature and in our closet. So, how do you create a fall eyeshadow look to match the season? We’ll share with you both of our approaches, which is of course, at both our ages!

Jen’s Fall Eyeshadow Look

For a long time, I was super weary of warm-toned eyeshadow. Pretty much all of my eyeshadow was cool-tones and cooler neutrals.

I was worried that reddish colors would make my eyes look red all the time. Because of the contacts I was wearing, my eyes were irritated and red a lot (it’s gotten better, thankfully).

But gradually, warmer colors started getting more and more popular, and cooler colors were getting really hard to find. So I ended up more willing to try different colors.

These days I’ve been doing more true neutral eyeshadow looks, but I still like incorporating warmer colors. Even more than cooler colors if you can believe it!

Fall is all about warm tones, with the changing leaves, pumpkins, hay and all the fun fall things. So I love changing up my makeup to match, even just a little bit.

When wearing colors like this, I usually keep the rest of my makeup in the same color family. So, brown eyeliner, neutral blush and lipstick!

No matter how I’m doing my makeup, I start with a beige shadow all over my lid.

I recently came across a tip for hooded eyes, to basically make your own crease above your actual crease area. Start building color in this area with a light rust shadow first and gradually adding in more and blend, blend, blend!

Once I feel I have enough color in the crease, I’ll blend downward onto my lid and add a little bit of a darker shade to the outside corner of my eye.

As a last eyeshadow step, I take the original beige shadow and pack it on the inner corner of my lid and blending outward.

Plus, I blended a couple of the middle and darker shades for my lower lash line, and connected at the outer corner.

I used a brown pencil liner to keep the soft, smokey look. Whereas my typical winged liner would have been too much for the overall look.

Eyeshadow in this color family can seem intimidating (it did to me!). But it’s much more wearable than you might expect. Even if you’re not ready to jump in with a full smokey eye, swapping out some of these shadows will give your normal makeup look a fall-feel!

Dianne’s Look

I have loved creating a fall eyeshadow look for a long time. I feel that when I was growing up, it was ok to be “matchy-matchy”. So early on I gravitated to matching my makeup to my outfit. And since I love to wear the entire fall color palette – rusts, browns, mustards and greens, it’s important to me to have the right look.

I have several eyeshadow palettes in these colors, but I decided to go to Sephora to find a new one. I got some help to pick one out, and I am glad I did. The palette I am working with is Anastasia’s Soft Glam Eyeshadow Palette.

This is a great palette and my photos won’t do it justice, so I will share a photo from Sephora to give a better idea of how rich the colors are.

Anastasia Soft Glam palette

I always like to use three different shades when creating a fall eyeshadow look. With this palette I used Burnt Orange all over my lids, followed by Sienna in the crease and Cyprus Umber in the outer corners.

These shadows are highly pigmented, so I did have to do a a lot of blending so it wouldn’t look too heavy. At the end I put a light brush of Orange Soda over my lids to brighten it up a bit.

Here are two photos, taken just five minutes apart. The lighting is just a smidgen different, but you can still see how well the shadow looks with my rust colored sweater. I think it all blends together perfectly. I think this palette would look with all fall colors.

As I mentioned, I did already have some similar palettes in my makeup drawer already. I still like them all, but since I had an excuse for something new……. These will also give you a great fall eyeshadow look. The first photo is the Anastasia palette that I am wearing above

Like Jen, I do like to keep this an “all brown” look. My eyeliner is a pencil from Charlotte Tilbury in Barbarella Brown and my lipstick is Maybelline’s Color Sensational in Rum Riche. I have to give a shout out to this Maybelline lipstick in general. I have it in several shades and love it. It’s very moisturizing and stays on for a long time. It’s also only $5.48 on Amazon as of this writing. I highly recommend giving it a try.

I also wanted to share a product that I just recently discovered that has been really helpful with my eyeshadow looks. It’s a color corrector from Seint that I am using in the inner corners of my eyes.

I have a little bit of a “dark area” for lack of a better phrase in that area, but using this color corrector has made it look ten times better. So, if you are experiencing something similar, I highly recommend giving it a try.
