The best phrase that I read describing New York fashion week for Fall/Winter 2022 is this: Celebration.
If what I am reading is correct, there is a move a foot to take you out of your sweats and back into dressier clothes. But it’s not just coming from the designers themselves. There have been signs all over the country that women are ready to get back out there and get dressed up again. (I can attest to this personally).
So, if you’re ready like I am, here are the best new trends coming this fall from New York fashion week. Some of them are are a carryover from Spring/Summer 2022, like the bright pops of color and “sparkle”. The overall theme for the spring shows last September was “optimism”, so there is a continuation of that theme in going from optimism to celebration.

Romantic Period Styling
I think of these looks as inspired by the television show “Bridgerton”. This look is so popular right now that Bloomingdales is going to have a pop-up shop in their flagship store in New York from March 3 – May 16 this year. You can read more about that pop-up display in a WWD article HERE.
This look has a lot of corsets, rounded shoulders and defined waists. There were a lot of off-the-shoulder tops in the collections I viewed so I think you will see that look continuing throughout the year. (I’ve already seen a lot of it for spring).
Designer Christian Siriano described his New York fashion week collection this year as “Victorian Matrix” which is almost what it sounds like – feminine cuts in fabrics such as leather to combine a softer and harder look together. You’ll see one of his looks in the leather section below.

SKIRTS
Full Skirts
The defined waist look is being exaggerated this year by full skirts. And while most of the full skirts were shown on longer ballgown styles, it was shown in shorter versions such as the Jason Wu look on the left above.
Another look that was seen on the runway at New York fashion week was the wearing of sweaters over these fuller skirts. It definitely is a warm and cozy look.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Classic Styling/Oversized Blazers
If I read it once, I must have read this phrase 100 times: the suit is back. This is all a part of the evil plot to get you out of your athleisure wear if/when you return to the office.
Many of the looks I saw with these blazers are also waist defining, like the corsets and full skirts talked about above. A lot of blazers, while oversized, still had a belt or clasp to cinch in your waist.
I did also see oversized trench coats in the collections, which is another carryover from Spring/Summer 2022.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Knits
Knits are always a fall staple, but there was a great emphasis put on them this year at New York fashion week it seemed. From wearing knits over your full skirts to the more detailed woven knits in unique patterns, we should see some interesting patterns this season.

A Step Up in Leather
I feel comfortable saying that almost every designer had leather in some form in their collections at New York fashion week. Even in the images above, you can see that I have looks from eight different designers. A lot of the leather looks for this fall are in sets. I mentioned Christian Siriano’s “Victorian Matrix” look above. His blue leather suiting on the far right is a perfect blend on softer suit look in an edgier fabric.
Note also that in these leather looks, you are seeing the other trends incorporated – from waist defining belts to corsets.

“Sparkle”
“Sparkle” is my term I’ve coined for this look. Just like my recap of the Spring/Summer New York fashion week (read it HERE) which included satin and sequins, the optimistic and celebratory looks continue into fall, including in full skirts.

Pop of Color
Bold and bright colors are continuing throughout the year. They started with Spring’s optimistic look and most likely will become even more popular as we head into the “celebratory” feel of fall/winter and the holidays.
Monochromatic Looks
As you may have noticed scrolling through this post, a lot of the looks are monochromatic (which I personally love!). We’re seeing these looks in both bold colors and neutrals, so no matter what type of colors you like to wear, you should be able to achieve this look.
Chocolate/Cocoa Brown
It is definitely looking like brown is going to be the “it” color for fall. Both the chocolate and cocoa browns seem to be replacing the more beige tones for fall. As you can see, almost every designer featured brown in their collections from coats, suiting and even evening wear. Don’t rule it out – I find there are lots of ways to wear brown and have it look great, especially with a few makeup tweaks!
We’ve written an entire post, “The Best Brown Clothes to Add to Your Wardrobe” which was just updated with all new pieces for Fall 2022!
