NY Fashion Week Recap: New & Returning Trends for Spring/Summer 2022

NY Fashion Week Recap in one word: Optimism.

We’re both hearing it and seeing it. From the designer’s quotes to the bold and bright colors. Just like us, fashion is looking forward to its comeback for Spring 2022.

“This collection reimagines canonical ideas of nationality, gender and beauty through my lens of unabashed optimism and unadulterated hope”

Prabal Gurung

Before you start reading, we want to let you know that this fashion week recap post is only complete for now. We plan to update it as more trends begin to emerge over the next few months. The London, Milan and Paris shows are up next. In early 2022, we will be adding “the look for less” to this post. We will add some “everyday” ways to wear these trends that will fit everyone’s budget and lifestyle. So stay tuned for more. (Don’t worry – we’ll remind you when it’s been updated).

Bright Colors

NY Fashion Week Recap - The Harper Girls

Bright colors are the first thing that “popped” (no pun intended) when creating this fashion week recap. Much of these happy colors are due, understandably, to the pandemic. People want to feel optimistic that we are almost on the other side of all of this. That’s why there is a good chance that bright colors will reign supreme for Spring/Summer 2022.

Pantone also released their NYFW Spring/Summer 2022 Color Trend Report. If you want to learn more about the specific colors they are predicting, you can read the color trend report here.

Gingham/Check Prints

We saw gingham this season, but it looks like it will be even more prevalent next year. Michael Kors showed a lot of gingham in fun and different ways. We’ve seen gingham combined with cut-outs (more on that below) for a two-trends-in-one look. I personally love the vintage feel of gingham – it feels like something my mom would have worn in the 1950’s and 60’s and it brings back happy memories.

Oversized Trench Coats

So, if you’re a part of my generation, this may remind you of the “London Fog” trench coats from the 1980’s, complete with shoulder pads. While they may remind you of that, these are way cooler. It will interesting to play with styling these. My first instinct is that you will need to be tall, especially if they are roomy. But we’ll have to see.

Cutouts

Here’s another trend that started this year and also shows no sign of slowing down. This will be a tough one for me to wear, at least as they are pictured below. However, I have already seen some toned-down version of cut-outs that will most likely fall in the mainstream fashion.

Satin and Sequins

This feels like another optimistic trend – satin and sequins for when we start going back out at night. And we are definitely all looking forward to that!

Black and White

This really feels more like a “classic” than a trend. It’s one of my (and probably yours) favorite color combinations. As you can see, Michael Kors combined the classic black and white with a beautiful cut-out dress. I think we will continue to see a blending of trends as we approach Spring/Summer 2022.
