Did you know that royal blue has its own Wikipedia page? That’s because there is a history behind the color. The story goes that it was created by clothiers in England for a dress competition for Queen Charlotte around 1810.
There are lots of different shades within royal blue and you might even interchange it with cobalt blue. They are very similar, however, the “official” difference between the two is that royal blue is considered a more vivid and deep tint of blue and cobalt blue is more medium bright and darker than royal blue.
Either way, we love these shades of blue and think they look great on just about everyone! The pieces we’ve picked below are mostly royal but could easily fall into either category. No matter your hair color or skin tone, you should be able to find a shade that works for you.

Royal Blue Tops
BLOUSES/TOPS
The first top below is the top I am wearing in the photo above. We love all the styles of these tops. Best of all, they can go with anything – white, black, denim, you name it.
These are some classic tops, but we’ve also include some casual tees and tanks, along with some cardigans and the perfect transitional piece for when we get closer to fall.
TEES AND TANKS
SWEATERS
Dresses
Last year I found a beautiful royal blue dress for a wedding and made me fall in love with royal blue all over again. So when I was shopping for casual dresses for my recent vacation, I was on the hunt for one in royal blue. The one shown below is from Old Navy. It’s the perfect shade of blue and also loose fitting and comfortable.
We’ve got more dress options below, some casual, some a little more dressy.
JUMPSUITS, SKIRTS AND PANTS
The one thing I did find when doing research for this post is that you can find royal blue is just about any piece of clothing and accessories right now. And while this color is really on-trend right now, it is a classic that will stay in style. So you don’t have to worry about investing in a nice piece that will be out of style next year.
Shoes and Accessories
If you don’t want to go “all in” on royal blue clothes, you add a small piece in a shoe or accessory. Here are some of our best finds:

HANDBAGS
SCARVES

Royal Blue Beauty Products
You can always add blue on your eyes and nails (I guess on your lips too, if you are daring!). This is another great way to add just a touch of royal blue.
EYE SHADOW
EYE LINER
NAIL POLISH
