NY Fashion Week: Best New Trends for Fall/Winter 2023/24

Last updated on October 5th, 2023 at 12:42 pm

It’s time to talk the best new trends for Fall/Winter 2023/24! The main theme for this season appears to be “wearability”, meaning designers are creating clothes that women actually want to wear. So, you’ll see a return to basics, elevated athleisure and more classic looks like shawls/wraps, leather and faux fur.

We’ve included designer looks for each trend as we always do. And, as always we’re also including more affordable and available pieces that will get you the same look. You’ll be chic all season long and won’t break the bank.

So, let’s get started with the number one trend we saw in every report: RED!

If you’re subscribed to our newsletter (and if not, sign up here) we just talked about the popularity of red in our “Look for Less” newsletter. You also saw this red dress that I shared that I have absolutely fallen in love with. It’s the first dress listed below (and it’s from Amazon!) It actually captures two trends for this fall; red and cape/shawl looks.

But there is so much more to red this season. It’s everywhere, from clothes to shoes to handbags and more. We’ve got you covered.

Back to Basics

Here are the classic looks that we mentioned – the looks that designers believe women really want to wear. From classic white shirts/blouse, wide leg pants and jeans and trench coats. You probably have a lot of these pieces in your closet, but now is a great time to update your pieces.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Shearling/Faux Fur

Who doesn’t love a comfy shearling or faux fur coat (or boots for that matter)? We definitely do. We styled this coat in our “How to Wear it at Any Age” series (Volume 14) a little while back and it’s still in style and available (listed first below and available in other colors). If you head to the post, you’ll see more details on how we both styled jacket. This is an updated picture of Jen and the jacket still looks amazing (and it’s only $48)!

Elevated Athleisure

Elevated athleisure

In several articles I saw this reference to “elevated athleisure”. The thinking behind the phrase is that it might be time to update our casual look from the pandemic to a more stylized, deliberate look. So we found some casual looks that are a little more fun than your basic crewneck sweatshirt.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Full Skirts

We first noticed this trend while watching “And Just Like That”. It seemed that Carrie Bradshaw was wearing them in every scene. They do make your waist look small, offering a flattering fit. And the cut often means “no shapewear required” – that’s a plus!

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Shawls/Wraps/Capes

shawls, wraps and capes

This is a classic look that doesn’t really ever go out of style. But shawls/capes/wrap are having their moment. We love them in both solids and patterns, especially plaid. You can easily dress them up or dress them down. I love this one I found on Amazon. It has a pull-through “slot” which keeps it nicely draped and easy to take on or off. And it comes in 34 colors! Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Metallics

Metallics are not just for the holidays. They are a great “going-out” fabric for all occasions and celebrations. You can pair metallic tops with jeans just as well as faux leather pants. Metallics are incredibly versatile.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Power Suiting

80's inspired fall trends

The power suiting trend this season is a throwback to the 1980’s (think Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl”). Jackets are oversized and you might even see a shoulder pad on occasion. This trend goes hand-in-hand with elevated athleisure. There is a move to bring dressier, more professional looks back as we return to the office.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Leather

Leather is another trend that never really goes out of style, but is more popular than ever right now. You can find leather in just about anything from dresses to pants to everyday tops. Because almost all of these pieces are “faux leather”, they are very affordable.

Here is my leather look. The pants I purchased from Boston Proper last year and they are not longer available. I did include some similar pants and will include my top and shoes in the carousel below.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Oversized Coats

oversized coats

Along with the oversized blazers, comes the oversized coats. It seems to be a part of the 80’s revival going on right now. Oversized coats are really perfect for wearing over chunky sweaters and even blazers. Their loose structure is perfect for layering and keeping you warm at the same time.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Statement Jewelry

Another trend that reminds us of the 80’s. Statement earrings, in particular, can really be fun to wear, especially with a monochrome outfit. Big earrings or a statement necklace can be the finishing touch.

Trends for Fall/Winter 2023: Hosiery

hosiery trends 2023

Hosiery is back but it’s definitely not your grandma’s pantyhose. Think bright, vibrant colors and lots of patterns. This is not the year for legs to stay hidden in the background. We found that Target has so many patterned tights to pick from, only about $10 each.
