The Best Not-So-Basic Black Pants

Black Pants. They might be the least exciting wardrobe item to buy, but yet they are one of the most important. And we can’t have just one pair. We need different pairs for different occasions. We need them long, we need them cropped. Then we need them dressy and then we need them casual.

I think you know what we’re talking about! To help you out, we’ve curated the best selection of black pants we could find in all different styles. We think there’s one (or two or three!) that you might need for your closet.

In addition to all the regular styles, Jen’s has added a section on maternity styles as well!

Our Favorite Black Pants

Pull On Black Pants

I (Dianne) am going to start with my favorite – pull on styles. The reason I like these so much is not just for the reason you think. Yes, they are so comfortable, but what I really like is the smooth lines of a pull-on pant. No matter if you want your top tucked, front tucked or worn out, you won’t have that “bump” from a front closure. It’s a nice sleek look!

For these selections, I focused just on the waist band, so there are different leg styles

Sailor Pants

This is another look I love! It adds just the right amount of detail in a chic and classy way. My pants are from Zara. You can’t tell from the photo but they have an elastic waist in the back. So they are easy to wear and the elastic waist does not show.

Patterned Black Pants

When shopping for black pants, you don’t always have to think “solid”. Adding a pair of patterned black pants to your wardrobe will allow you to change it up, while still have a classic look.

Wide Leg Pants

Even though we said “not-so-basic” blank pants, we do still need to cover some more traditional looks like these wide legged one.

Straight Leg/Cropped/Ankle Black Pants

Of course, we also have to cover traditional straight leg pants, including ankle, cropped and front slit styles.

Linen Black Pants

In our recent post, “The Best Spring Fashion Trends for 2023” we talked about how black is very “in” for this spring. Linen pants are a great way to add black to your summer wardrobe while still keeping cool

Black Jeans

Who doesn’t have at least one pair of black jeans in their closet. They are a staple that will be in style for years to come. And they are not just for fall/winter. You can really wear them all year long.

Travel Black Pants

So who doesn’t wear black pants when they travel? Instead of listing leggings and yoga pants, we included some black pants that you can wear to level up your travel game.

I (Dianne) am particularly fond of Boston Proper’s Beyond Travel Collection. They have great pieces that are both stylish and comfortable. I’ve included two different pairs of their pants below. But you should check out their entire collection – they have lots of matching pieces for a chic travel look.

Jen’s Black Pants: Maternity Style

I’ve had a long-standing relationship with black pants since I started working 15 years ago. Things have definitely changed from when Aunt Dianne was working in the corporate world and business formal was the norm.

In my first job, the dress code was business casual every day. Because of the work we did, there was a chance clients would be in our office at any given time. And I was taught, and still to this day, think dressing business casual is a sign of respect for my clients.

I took this mentality all the way through the pandemic, and made it a point to wear black pants whenever I would see my clients in person. Nowadays, when I do see my clients, it’s over a video call (rarely), and they don’t see my pants anyway.

Although I’m not visiting clients regularly, I still think it’s important to have at least a couple pairs of black pants (of some kind) in my closet.

Mike and I are season ticket holders for Broadway in Detroit, and we also see it as a sign of respect to dress nicely for the show. Even though a LOT of people haven’t gotten this memo.

Because I’m pregnant, I’m not going to invest in a pair of nice dress pants because I don’t need them at the moment. But, I do have a couple pairs of nice black jeans that I wear often!

I had a couple different kinds of pairs in rotation when I was regularly wearing dress pants. In the winter, the last thing I wanted to do was wear heels or have my ankles exposed. So I primarily wore skinny cuts, that could easily tuck into my dress boots.

In warmer weather, I switch to ankle length, straight leg pants, so I can wear them with any kind of shoe. I like the silhouette it creates with my body shape, vs. skinny pants all the time. But that’s just my personal preference.

Black jeans are a great staple in your wardrobe, and easily dress an outfit up. Or you can wear them everyday. They’re super versatile!
