The Best Transitional Basics for Summer to Fall

Last updated on August 31st, 2022 at 01:40 pm

It’s that time of year for me – when I start to check my wardrobe for some of my transitional basics. I do this more in fall, mostly because of the weather in Michigan. We usually have an amazing fall season, better than our spring. It seems to go from winter to summer and skip spring here. But fall is awesome and there’s more of a need for those transitional basics.

So, whether you want to dress in layers or go right to the sweaters, here are some of the best basics I’ve found.

Transitional Basics: T-Shirts

After all these years, the Gap is still my go-to for t-shirts. I love the fit and they have been consistent over time. They still have the same great quality. But there are lots of other great options for you to pick from.

So you might be ready mentally for fall, but the weather is still warm. Here are some cute tops that will give you the look of fall while still staying cool.

BASIC SWEATERS & SWEATSHIRTS

Further into winter and fall, I like a sweater with a little “something” – a different neck or sleeve style or even some embellishment. But for this time of year, I like a simple sweater in a fall color that can easily be layered with blazer or light jacket.

BASIC CARDIGANS

You can never go wrong with having a cardigan in your closet. And it doesn’t have to be basic black either. Cardigans are a great way to add a pop of color. All of these cardigans shown below come in an array of great colors.

Crewneck or hoodie, this is the best time for just a sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers on your way to the cider mill (at least here in Michigan!). I like to find something in a unique color just to make it a little more fun!

Transitional Basics: Leggings

Jeans could (and probably will) be their own blog post, so for now, let’s stick to the easy topic – leggings. We’re just talking the basics here, mostly the “run around” kind, but we’ll include a couple of nicer pairs. Jen and I are both in love with the Spanx faux leather leggings so we have to give them a shoutout one more time.

I really like the basic leggings from Old Navy. They are only $10 and I wear them all fall/winter long around the house. If it’s a really chilly day I will opt for some fleece lined leggings that I have included as well.
