Great Recipes to Start Christmas Morning Right

Christmas Morning. I wish I looked as calm and relaxed as I do in the picture below every year. I can say for sure that I never have on this much makeup on Christmas morning. My Christmas mornings tend to be a bit more frazzled, but I love it.

I love the feeling that a Christmas morning breakfast brings. There’s so much energy and excitement for the day ahead. It’s wonderful to start with a great meal. (I will always have a giant cup of tea though – that’s how I start my Christmas morning!)

Christmas Morning

So what are my go-to recipes for Christmas morning? You’ll always find things that are both savory and sweet. I am one of those people who need “a little something” sweet in the mornings, so you’ll always find some kind of coffee cake on my breakfast table.

I always accompany my breakfast meals with assorted fruit and in our house we always have Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls, a tradition that started when the boys were little. It’s one of the things that you wonder if they will serve to their kids someday.

A few months back you may have seen my post, “Celiac Disease and My Family” in which I talk about the fact that two of my daughter-in-laws have Celiac disease and how we’ve had to willingly make adjustments in our meals. That goes for Christmas morning too. So, if you also need to be mindful of your gluten intake, I have some options for you as well.

Christmas Morning Recipes

Egg and Sausage Casserole – Serves 12

  • One pound pork sausage
  • One 8 ounce crescent roll dough
  • 8 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar

Optional: Add some bacon and 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard (I add both; how much bacon really is up to you)

  1. Place sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Lightly grease a 9″ x 13″ baking dish.
  3. Line the bottom of the prepared baking dish with crescent roll dough and sprinkle with crumbled sausage (and bacon if you’ve decided to add it). In large bowl, mix beaten eggs, mozzarella and cheddar. Season the mixture with dry mustard and pour over sausage and crescent rolls
  4. Bake 25-30 minutes in the preheated oven or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean

I originally found this recipe on Allrecipes.com, if you’d like to read the reviews and other suggestions.

Cheese and Bacon Frittata (Gluten-Free) – Serves 6

  • 5 slices bacon
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 7″ x 11″ baking dish.
  2. Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain bacon slices on paper towels and crumble.
  3. Beat eggs, milk, butter, salt, and ground pepper in a bowl; pour into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with onions, bacon, and Cheddar cheese.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes.

One important thing to note here – check to make sure you have a 7″x 11″ baking dish. I have lots of Pyrex dishes and I did not have this size so I had to purchase one. You can get one quickly here on Amazon.

I also found this recipe on Allrecipes.com. I pretty much stick to the recipe except that I omit the green onions (husband is not a fan) and I usually add a little more bacon. Are you seeing a pattern here?? Also, if I am having a large group, I will sometimes make two of these.

French Toast Bake (Overnight)

This recipe I got from my friend, Traysi. She is an amazing cook, so anything she recommends I have to try. I love sweet things for breakfast and this recipe is right up my alley!

  • 1/2 cup melted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 loaf of thickly sliced bread (like Texas Toast)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling
  • Cinnamon for sprinkling
  1. Melt butter in microwave and add brown sugar. Stir until mixed
  2. Pour butter/sugar mix into bottom of 9″ x 13″ pan, spread
  3. Beat eggs, milk and vanilla
  4. Lay single slices of bread in pan
  5. Spoon 1/2 of the egg mixture on bread layer
  6. Sprinkle some cinnamon over the bread/eggs
  7. Add 2nd layer of sliced bread
  8. Spoon on remaining egg mixture
  9. Cover and chill in fridge overnight
  10. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes (covered fro the first 30 minutes).
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon

As I mentioned, I will have gluten-free options available. Having something sweet and gluten-free is a little more difficult but I did find something delicious and best of all, it’s easy! Krusteaz makes this gluten-free cinnamon swirl crumb cake and it’s amazing. I highly recommend it. They also have a “regular” crumb cake, which I have also had and honestly, I can’t tell the difference.

Last, but not least is one of my favorite recipes for blueberry muffins. My same friend, Traysi, whose French Toast recipe I added above, loves these muffins. When a cook as cook as her likes something you make, you feel pretty good about yourself. These have been a family favorite for years, a recipe I got on Allrecipes.com at least 10 years ago! And it’s not just me – these muffins have a 5 Star Review with over 14,000 reviewers!
