The color block trend seems to ebb and flow in popularity but it never really goes away. While doing some online shopping for other things, I kept seeing color block pieces in all different types of clothing and accessories. That sent me down a rabbit hole trying to see how prevalent the trend is and it seems that it is back and very popular for this fall/winter season.
Then, while watching “She-Hulk, Attorney At Law”, I saw this dress on one of the characters and thought it epitomized the color blocking trend for 2022. Its classic styling and black/white is carrying over in popularity from spring. (I checked and it is sold out everywhere!)
Side Note: Did you know that there are several sites that will tell you how/where to purchase items you’ve admired on TV shows? The one I like is wornontv.net. I actually found and bought a dress a loved “as seen on” General Hospital. I would just recommend that you look quickly after seeing it on a show. Things tend to sell out fast.
What Does “Color Block” Mean?
Color block (or color blocking) is when you mix two to three (or even more) bold and sometimes surprising colors together in one piece to create a stand-out outfit. The trend debuted in the 1960’s by Yves Saint Laurent. (You can read more about the original color block dress at The Costume Institute at the Met.)
The color block dress was a big part of the mod style of the 1960’s. I found this very similar dress on Etsy, which typifies the original color block dress. (It is available for purchase, just click on the image)
Today’s Color Blocking Styles
So, what did I find when I went down the rabbit hole? I’ve put my favorites in each category below. As you can imagine, black and white was very dominant, but I think that’s ok. It’s still probably everyone’s favorite color blocking duo – I know it’s mine!

DRESSES
TOPS
As it sometimes happens, I end up buying something I find when writing a blog post. So, that’s how I bought this pink/gray top. The pink reminded me of the extremely popular Barbiecore Pink that we recently wrote about and I just love the overall look.
SWEATSHIRTS
PONCHOS/RUANAS
I bought this poncho last year, and while it’s no longer available, it’s a great example of how to wear a color block poncho. (I have a similar one recommended below)
