Beauty At Any Age Volume 12: How To Wear Brown Lipstick

Last updated on October 17th, 2023 at 01:52 pm

How to wear brown lipstick. We chose this topic for this volume of “Beauty At Any Age” because we know it can be intimidating. But it can be perfect this time of year to coordinate with all the fall colors in your wardrobe.

We both love wearing fall colors and changing up our makeup for the season. That, combined with how Jen found this new lipstick we both love (story below), it became easy to pick brown lipstick for this post. You CAN wear brown lipstick at any age.

Our Brown Lipstick

As you can see, it is a very pigmented color, but we loved it. When you look at the photos of each of us wearing it, you will see that it looks a little different on each of us, based on our skin tone. So you may consider testing it on yourself to see how it looks on you. (More on how to match your lipstick to your skin tone below).

The lipstick itself is long-wearing with just the right amount of gloss. It stayed on for hours!!

Urban Decay Lipstick in Almost Strangers

Jen’s How-To For Brown Lipstick

Brown anything is so quintessentially fall! This formula is similar to the Maybelline Super Stay Vinyl Ink. It’s a long-lasting liquid lipstick with a shiny finish.

At my sister’s wedding, the makeup artist used the Urban Decay Vice Lip Bond Glossy Longwear Liquid Lipstick in Text Em, and I loved it! So when Aunt Dianne and I were talking about this edition of Beauty At Any Age, I mentioned this lipstick and we decided to go for the brown!

Two ways I would wear this lipstick – one with a simple eye look, and two a monochromatic brown look!

For option one, I would do my usual wing liner with matte eyeshadow and keep the focus on the lipstick.

Option two is really easy to do, but makes a statement!

Start with a cream shadow and apply on your lid. Using a fluffy brush and a mid-tone brown eyeshadow, buff the crease so there isn’t a harsh line where the shadow stops. That’s it!

Use your bronzer or a neutral/brown blush. To really tie your cheeks and eyes, put a little bit of your blush in your crease as well.

You don’t need to have a brown lip liner, just use a neutral color that’s close to your lip color. After applying, if you go outside your lip line, use a small brush and concealer to clean up the area.

Dianne’s How-To

Jen and I were shopping in Sephora together when we came up with the idea for brown lipstick. She told me that she had been wearing this Urban Decay lipstick at her sister’s (my niece) wedding and I immediately remembered how great it looked, so I was in.

We intentionally picked this darker shade because we wanted it to stand out. Some of the lighter browns can almost be neutrals (which is fine), but we wanted some bolder color.

I planned my outfit around this lipstick, which was easy because I have a lot of brown tones in my wardrobe. I used neutral brown eyeshadow because I wanted my lips to be the highlighted feature. As Jen suggested above, I used a neutral/brown toned blush just for some highlight on my cheeks but not to add more color.

I would definitely do a all-brown dramatic look; literally from head to toe. To start, I would swap out my neutral eyeshadow for a more dramatic look. I have a chocolate brown cream eyeshadow from Charlotte Tilbury that I would wear, keep the blush and lips the same and then wear a chocolate brown top/outfit.

Brown is one of those colors that initially you might think is kinda blah, but I love it and think, done well, can be very glamorous! See the celebrity looks below our lipstick recommendations!
