How to Use and Wear Highlighter Like a Pro

There’s something so intriguing about highlighters! No matter your age, preference in makeup or skill level, you can incorporate highlighter. Seeing makeup pros using tons of highlighter can be intimidating, but here’s some ways to use and wear highlighter!

Highlighter goes hand-in-hand with contour and bronzer. Highlight is meant to bring out the high-points of the face, while contouring is meant to define areas of your face like your cheekbones, jaw, nose, etc.

While contour and highlight are typically matte formulas, you can take highlighting another step further with a shimmery formula for extra glow.

The places for a shimmery highlighter do differ slightly from where a matte highlight/contour product would go.

Where to Apply:

The main places for highlight include:

  • Cheekbones
  • Bridge of the nose
  • Brow bone
  • Temples/forehead
  • Cupid’s bow
  • Chin
  • Inner corners of eyes

While powder highlighter formulas are the most popular and easiest to apply, there are other formulas too.

Powder formulas are easiest to apply with a brush or your fingers. They can also be intensified with a setting spray!

Cream formulas can be applied with a synthetic brush, but fingers and a damp beauty sponge will give you the best results.

For liquid formulas, stick to your fingers or a beauty sponge to blend it in.

Similar to other products you’d use with a beauty sponge, it will soak up some of the product and won’t be as intense as if you’d used your fingers.

Not Sure How to Wear Highlighter?

Start with a powder formula that doesn’t pack quite as much of a punch, like the Essence Pure Nude Highlighter. Apply a little bit on the high points of your cheekbones, and maybe a little on the inner corners of your eyes for a hint of brightness.

Keep adding more layers if you want your highlight a little bit brighter, or try adding some to your brow bone or even your Cupid’s bow!

Keep in Mind!

If you have textured skin, sometimes highlighter can, literally, highlight imperfections. But don’t stress, there’s a formula out there that will work on you! And make sure you keep hydrated and exfoliate, so your skin is glowy from the inside!
