The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Last updated on December 27th, 2021 at 11:15 pm

We’re both moms, but in completely different ways. Jen is mom to two and half year old Emeline Rose and Dianne has been stepmom to three “boys” for the last 16 years and most recently became GiGi to 16 month old grandson Colin. Here’s our quick perspective on gifting for the Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Guide!

Dianne

As mentioned, I became a stepmom to three amazing boys (yes, now men) 16 years ago and I consider myself extremely fortunate, especially with our newest edition, little Colin. So, I may be a “Harper Girl” but I am surrounded daily by Boyer Boys (even our dog Bandit, is a male!). When my mom was still on the planet, I used to love to use Mother’s Day as an excuse to do something just for her where she couldn’t resist or say “it’s too much”. So, I say go for it. Give your mom something she’s been secretly wanting but won’t ask for!

Jen

Since becoming a mom, I’ve been trying to make an effort to ask for things for birthdays and holidays that I wouldn’t buy for myself. Which is why for holidays like Mother’s Day I think it’s important to get your mom or the mother figures in your life something special. Especially something that doesn’t also benefit you, like an air fryer (unless she explicitly asked for it!). So that’s why we’ve put together the ultimate Mother’s Day gift guide, to help with all your gift-giving needs!

Moms deserve something a little impractical to show them how much you care, right? And same if you’re a mom too! What’s something you’ve had your eye on that you would never buy for yourself?

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Living Things –

Flowers are a pretty traditional Mother’s Day gift, but you know the thing with flowers is? They wilt and then you throw them away! My (Jen) mom has an incredible green thumb, and got it from her mom. I’m always in awe of their gardens, while I forget to water most plants. But I love having plants in my house

Green thumb or not, why not give them a living gift that will keep living?

Bloomscape is an awesome company that will deliver plants right to your house. There’s different pot color options to choose from, plus you can sort by the maintenance level!

Plants start around $65

If your mom or mother-figure wishes they had a green thumb and could grow their own veggies, herbs or flowers, the Click and Grow Smart Garden is an awesome option! I (Jen) got the Smart Garden 3 for Christmas, and I’m obsessed with it! Right now I’m growing lettuce, basil and strawberries.

All you have to do is insert the plant pods for what you want to grow, fill the Smart Garden reservoir with water, and plug it in. Done! Once you plug it in, the Smart Garden will be on a 16 hours on and 8 hours off cycle. All you have to do is add water when it looks like the reservoir is getting low. Easy!

Another great option is Plantogram. As Oprah Winfrey has said “Why send flowers when you can send an entire olive tree with soil, wrapped in a ribbon? The nice part is you don’t have to send a full tree. Their dwarf trees are great too, especially this raspberry bush!

Treats –

Who doesn’t like a treat of some sort? And it doesn’t have to be sweet either. There’s savory options too!

Detroit Cookie Co. – Mike and I (Jen) make it a point to stop here when we’re in the area. And Mike got me a dozen cookies for Valentine’s Day. They have so many different kinds, and they’re all so good. But I’d probably say my favorite is the Banana Pudding.

Gluten free options available!

Milk Bar – if you’ve never heard of or tried Milk Bar, get on it! They’ve been around in NYC since 2008, and were even featured on the Nexflix show “Chef’s Table”. We’ve ordered cookies, cake truffles and even a Milk Bar Pie kit before. If you think the recipient is willing to share, maybe go with the Milk Bar Pie so you can snag a slice.

Looking for something with less sugar? The Murray’s Cheese of the Month Club is a great option too. My (Jen) brother-in-law got this for me for Christmas, and every month when my cheese box arrives it’s like Christmas all over again.

We tend to think of hot chocolate as a “winter item” but for us, it tastes good all year long! These hot chocolate bombs look amazing any time of year! And they would be perfectly matched with the next item on the list!

To Keep Your Coffee Hot –

An Ember Mug is a great gift for the mom in your life who can never manage to finish a cup of coffee before it gets cold (it’s me!).

If your mom is like Jen’s, coffee cups were more often in the microwave than they were actually being drank out of.

Brittany and I got my mom the mug for Christmas a couple years back, and endless mugs have been saved from going lost in the microwave.

Hint hint!
The 10 oz. size is $99.95 on ember.com

Coffee Alternatives –

As a tea drinker (Dianne), I have often felt like a “beverage second class citizen”. That’s why I was excited to find this tea subscription from Sips by. You can get a three month subscription for only $45. They also have mugs and accessories at affordable prices that you can have something to wrap up with your gift subscription

And, of course, wine gifts (at least in our family) are always a good idea! Since we’re moving into warmer weather, this outdoor folding wine table would be perfect in anyone’s back yard.

Perfume –

Perfume can be expensive. So if you know what type of scents your mom likes, why not surprise her with a nice new perfume?

Traditional Gifts –

We tried to find a fun spin on some of the more traditional gifts. First up is earrings. Sometimes you have a great gift that you just want to add just a little something. Both of these earrings from Target fit the bill!

You can also never have enough make-up bags. This one from Coach Outlet is large enough to carry quite a lot and small enough to throw in your purse.

What we love about this journal is that it is designed to be shared between a mom and her child, passed back and forth to record the moments and memories that mark their special bond. It’s available from uncommongoods.com, which in general, has some very different gifts, just as their name suggests!

Artwork by Kids –

Hand your kids some paper, and depending on how much you trust them, some crayons, markers or paint, and let them go to town. Moms will love getting something homemade by their kids! But maybe also get her an actual gift too, ok?

Time alone –

If you still don’t know what to get a mom with young kids – DO THIS. Let her be alone for a little while, even if it’s just an hour. Take the kids out for a walk or go for a drive and bring back Starbucks. Or get out of the house early and let her sleep in.

And make sure she doesn’t try to do any chores while she’s alone. Make her binge-watch Bridgerton instead. You can also get her a gift certificate to Audible, so she can just sit back and listen to her favorite books.

Did you wait a little too long?
